Winter and Spring Migration with Nomadic Families
From the ancient times, Mongolians have been migrating to their seasonal pastures. There is a tradition to decide on what day to move that usuaaly coincides with a beautiful day. The migration is prepared the day before by cleaning the surrounding areas of where they lived. The housewife wakes up early on that day, prepares tea for the family and milks the animals. It is customary to bless nature with the first tea while chanting one’s thanks for the generous offers that nature has provide the family during their stay. After breakfast, the migration starts! Its the goal to completely settle down in the new location before sunset.

This program gives you an opportunity not only to learn Mongolian migration customs, but also participate and help in migration preparation with nomadic herder families.

Mrs. Uranchimeg is a professional Mongolian teacher, she has been teaching the Mongolian language at a local high school for 22 years in Ikh Tamir soum. After your intensive learning program, you can easily continue your language learning independently.

Learn the basics of training Mongolian Horses

From the ancient times, racing horses has always been a respected cultural tradition; horse racing festivals in Mongolia are year round.

During naadams, horses are choosen based on very definitive characters that will guide the trainer to selecting the very best among the racing horses. The process of training them includes many days of laborous works to test the horses and prepare them for their race distances according to the age classifications. The horses are classified by ages; adult horses, five year old horses, stallions, colts in third and forth years and yearling foals.

This program gives you a chance to participate in naadam and to train a horse locally famous trainer that has many years experience and has been awarded the champion horse trainer from his Province.

Learn how to sew with nomadic women!

On these programs you have the choice to learn how to sew your own traditional gaurments, you can choose to sew a Khurem, Khantaaz or even go all out and sew yourself a traditional Deel with nomadic women.

This program gives you a chance to sew your own deel under the instruction of nomadic women. In winter Mongolians wears sheep skin deels as they are very warm and cozy, in spring and autumn padded deels, and in summer time summer light deels.

On this special program you will have an opportunity to learn traditional ways of making homemade diary product (dried curds, ferment mare’s milk, cheeses, creams, and even yogurt based vodkas with nomadic women!

Generally Mongols prefer to eat dairy products during the summer months and fatty meats in cold seasons.

During your stay. You will visit nomadic families and have an opportunity to ride camels, horses and ox carts with local nomadic guides.

During this programme you will also travel by horse and/or ox cart to the Legendary Taihar Rock that is situated along the Tamir River with a local nomadic guide.

Visit with a nomadic family

One of Mongolia’s unique cultural traditions is importance placed on the welcoming of guest and visitors. Our nomadic families will share the inner knowledge of ‘great hospitality’ when stay with the family; how they welcome you into their Ger, the offering of snuff boxes (snuff boxes are made of such precious stones as Caledonia, jade, jasper, agate, turquoise, rock crystal topaz or ebony as well as porcelain or rare woods) and their beautifully embroidered silk punches, the offerings of milk tea and dairy products, etc. During your homestay, you will also have an opportunity to learn how to make homemade nomadic dried curds and fermented mare’s milk (including the milking of horses!). You will have time to travel by ox cart, horses and/or camels with a nomadic guide around the surrounding area for 30 or 60 minutes. At the end of the day, our family will bless you for a safe and good journey by sprinkling milk into the sky when you depart from nomadic family.

Celebrate “White Month” Festival with nomadic herder families

White Month is Mongolia’s biggest nationally celebrated festival! It is customary to celebrate the first day of the new spring - when old and new years change according to lunar calendar. The festival celebrates the passing of the harsh winter and the welcoming spring. Preperation for this day means to have everything cleaned, tables set with traditional dishes - lots of meat dumplings, and families wears their best traditional garmets before visiting relatives to exchange greetings and gifts.

This program gives you a good chance to celebrate white month with nomadic families during “bituun” or “new years eve”.
