Terelj National Park
Winter Travel for December: Preperation for White Moon Celebrations
Mongolia’s New Year is according to the Lunar calendar, or commonly called Tsagaan Sar which also translates as ‘White Moon’; depending on phases of the moon, Tsagaan Sar is celebrated one time between the end of January and early March.
On this nomadic cultural adventure, you will participate with the family in the preparation of White Moon’s main festive dishes (meat dumpling, cake ...,) and sew traditional costumes. During this time, you will wear your costume and visit other nomadic families by horseback and/or hot water bottle heated ox cart with warm blankets with a herder guide, and enjoy this rare opportunity to take in the winter beauty of Terelj National Park.

Pre-Departure Booking and Travel Orientation Fee: $25
Community Fee for 6 Days/ 5 Nights: $233 per person
Community Fee for 4 Days/ 3 Nights: $215 per person

Public bus to Terelj village: $1.50

| Day 1 |
Make Mongolian 'Banshes' with family: Our local guide will receive you at last bus stop inside the Terelj National Park. From here you will go by ox cart and/or horse to Mr. Chuka’s home that is 7 kilometers north of Terelj river. Upon arrival, you will be served lunch and hot milk tea. After lunch, you will help the family to make ‘bansh’ that are small meat dumplings. Prior to the White Moon Mongolian families around the country make hundreds, and in some cases, even thousands of buuz and banshes. In the evening, you will have dinner and hot milk tea with the family before retiring for the evening in their warm nomadic felt dwelling.

| Day 2 |
Sew a traditional jacket worn during White Moon Celebrations: After your breakfast, Mr. Chuka will guide you to your next ger, Ms Amarjargal’s family by ox cart or horse for 15km. Ms. Amarjargal will serve you hot tea and lunch which afterwards you will have an opportunity to help her to sew traditional jacket worn during the White Moon Celebrations. In the cold weather people wear warm sheep skin Deels (traditional long dress costume) with the jacket you will be making. These jackets are very colorful with decorative buttons on the right shoulder and no sleeves. In the evening, you will have dinner and hot milk tea with the family before retiring for the evening.

| Day 3 |
Sew a traditional Mongolian Deel: After breakfast at Mrs. Amarjargal’s Ger, you will continue your journey to M.r Bold’s family by ox cart for 5km. Upon arrival at Mr.Bold’s ger, you will be served a nomadic lunch and hot milk tea. In the late afternoon, Mrs. Battsetseg (Mr. Bold’s wife) will show you how to sew the traditional long dress known as a ‘Deel’. The winter deel is padded tunic lined with sheep skin or layers of raw cotton for additional warmth. Some deels that are made for men have a wide cup-shaped sleeve; this is very useful for protecting the hands from the cold winds when they ride a horse. In the evening, you will have dinner and hot milk tea with the family before retiring for the evening.

| Day 4 |
Make traditional Mongolian 'Moon Cakes': After breakfast at Mr. Bold’s Ger, you can try to herd livestock and milk their cow. This morning you have an opportunity to learn how to stitch Mongolian traditional garments, try on Mongolian costumes and take a few amazing photos. In the late morning, a herder will guide you to Mr. Ganzorig’s family by horse back or ox cart for 5km. At Mr.Ganzorig’a ger you will be served hot tea and lunch. After your meal and some rest, you will have an opportunity to help the family make traditional Moon cakes which is known as “Ul Boov”; this is one of several primary dishes for White Moon celebration. In the evening, you will have dinner and hot milk tea with the family before retiring for the evening.

| Day 5 |
Learn how to make meat dumplings with the family: After your breakfast at Mr. Ganzorig’s family, you will continue your journey to Mrs. Uranchimeg’s family by ox cart for 8km. Upon arrival, you will be served a nomadic lunch and hot milk tea. After you meal and a short rest, you can help her to make the main offering during White Moon Celebrations that is a meat dumpling which is known as ‘Buuz’; its bigger than banshes and mostly steamed. In the evening, you will have dinner and hot milk tea with the family before retiring for the evening.

| Day 6 |
Departure: After breakfast, you have an opportunity to help Mrs. Uranchimeg to boil milk and make nomadic milk tea. Later you will be served your farewell lunch and tea to which Mrs. Uranchimeg’s son or husband will take you to Terelj river bank by ox cart or horse for 1km to 2km where you will await your bus or private vehicle hire.
