MONGOLIA JEEP TOUR to THE BEST OF THE KHUVSGUL LAKE REGION ITINERARY

This overland trip is custom designed for those that only have a couple weeks in Mongolia but still desire to visit Mongolia’s highlight in-country destinations; Central Mongolia’s White Lake and the northern region’s Lake Khuvsgul.  The itinerary includes everything: adventure, overland expedition, nomadic travel and even hot springs!

Day One – Arrive in Tsetserleg Town (D – Mongolia Jeep Tour to Kuvsgul Lake and Overnight at Guesthouse): Welcome to Mongolia! Today you will start your overland expedition by public bus that will depart at 08:00 and along the way you will see Mongolia’s vast nomadic pastures, the Ancient Capital City of the Mongol Empire “Karakorum”, and more. Once you arrive in Tsetserleg town around at 4pm, our local driver will meet you at the rural bus station and you be will guided to the local guesthouse.

Day Two – Setup a Mongolian Ger (B, L, D – Mongolia Jeep Tour to Kuvsgul Lake and Overnight in Family’s Extra Genuine Nomadic Ger): Up early today for breakfast prior to the long 180 kilometer overland trip towards Mr. Lhagvadondov’s where you will part-take in nomadic activities. Upon your arrival at family, you will have an opportunity to erect a traditional Mongolian dwelling known as a “Ger” with the assistant of his family members. After lunch, you can enjoy trekking along the Chuluut River Canyon and admire the natural beauty of the location before evening’s nomadic dinner and hot traditional tea followed by a well-earned rest in the nomadic families extra Ger.

Day Three – Trek an Inactive Volcanic Mountain (B, L, D – Mongolia Jeep Tour to Kuvsgul Lake and Overnight in Family’s Extra Genuine Ger): In the morning you can participate in the milking of the family’s livestock as well as assist in the preparation of the nomadic breakfast with the family. After breakfast, the host family will drive you to the next family Mr. Ganbat where you will begin the 10-kilometer roundtrip hiking to Khorgo Volcano; from the summit at 2100 meters above sea level there is a splendid panoramic view of the whole lake and region. As you continue your journey, you will also visit the famous Yellow Dog’s cave (a local legend stated that a compassionate monk kept a sick dog in this cave in order to protect it from being killed) and have a picnic lunch. In the evening, you will return to the family where you will have an opportunity to participate in making a traditional nomadic dinner or milking animals with the family. After dinner, you will have plenty of time to relax and even get an early nights rest in the family’s extra nomadic Ger.

Day Four – Visit to Mr. Ganchudur’s Family and Walk Along the White Lake’s Scenic Shoreline (B, L, D – Mongolia Jeep Tour to Kuvsgul Lake and Overnight in Ger): After breakfast, you will walk to the next nomadic family along the astonishingly beautiful White Lake; the lake is about 20 kilometers long and 16 kilometers wide, it supports Pike and other fish as well as rare birds’ species. In the afternoon you will be served a picnic lunch along the shoreline before returning to the family where you learn the basics of nomadic dairy products; how to boil milk to make “urum” a creamy spread used to eat on bread and in Mongolia teas. In the evening, you will be welcomed to a farewell dinner with hot traditional milk tea before retiring to your Ger for your last night among Mongolia’s nomads.

Day Five – Overland Travel to Zuun Lake (B, L, D – Mongolia Jeep Tour to Kuvsgul Lake and Overnight at tourist camp):  After breakfast, you will overland drive through the wooded slopes of Khangai Mountain Range and cross High Mountain passes. Along the way, you will have a picnic lunch before arriving at Dalai van camp. Zuun Lake is situated about 2000 meters above sea level and it can be really cold (below 13 degrees) in the evening even during summer time. It is a salt-water lake and it’s so exclusive that it is not even marked on the google map! Enjoy the dinner and beautiful view tonight.

Day Six – Overland Trip to Lake Khuvsgul (B, L, D – Mongolia Jeep Tour to Kuvsgul Lake and Overnight in Extra Genuine Nomadic Ger – Home Stay):  Lake Khuvsgul is truly a highlight of any trip to Mongolia and today you head north to the crystal clear waters – it is the deepest lake in Central Asia, measured with a maximum depth of 262 meters. The reflections of larch forests and majestic Mountains around the lake are truly amazing; 96 rivers and streams feed into Khuvsgul Lake and the Egiin River exits from it. On the way we will pass through Murun, which is the capital of Khuvsgul Province before reaching the overnight destination at the ger camp located next to Khuvsgul Lake.

Day Seven – Hiking to the Reindeer People (B, L, D – Mongolia Jeep Tour to Kuvsgul Lake and Overnight in Mongolian Ger Camp): After breakfast, you will start your hiking journey (10 kilometers round trip) to Shar Tsaram where you will have an opportunity to meet a Reindeer family. You will enjoy in the breath taking landscapes of Khuvsgul Province, which is already renown both domestically and internationally for its pristine natural beauty. You will greatly enjoy trekking along the beautiful shoreline and a picnic lunch surrounded by picturesque landscapes. In the late evening, you will return to the camp for a dinner and tea to be followed by a deep and relaxing sleep in your Ger.

Day Eight – Depart back to Murun (B, L, D – Mongolia Jeep Tour to Kuvsgul Lake and Overnight in Local Guesthouse):  After your morning breakfast, you can enjoy continue walking along the Lake Khuvsgul or If you want you can also possibly rent a kayak/canoe from the camp and do short excursion surrounding areas. After your lunch, our driver will take you to Murun (125 kilometers). Today you can visit to the Local Museum and Chingunjav Main Square. You will have a dinner and overnight at local hotel.

Day Nine – Depart back to Ulaanbaatar (B): Shortly after your morning breakfast, you will take the morning 08am bus journey back to Ulaanbaatar.
