Day One – Pre-Trip Mountain Nomad Travel Workshop: You’ll learn how Nomads make the ‘One and Only’ famed Mongolian Barbecue known as ‘Khorkhog’ out in the open Steppe (L, D – Mongolia Jeep Tour to Terelj and Overnight in own Ger): Depart from GER to GER Office around 0900-1030 and drive for approx. 4 hours by private-vehicle to Terelj National Park (be aware of road construction). Upon arrival in the Terelj Village, our local nomad will greet you with either an ox cart or horses.
Day Two – Learn to make Mongolian BBQ (L, D – Mongolia Jeep Tour to Terelj and Overnight in Extra Ger): From here you will begin your 3 kms journey towards the nomadic family’s pasture which involves crossing the river and continuing northwards through an incredibly stunning mountain river valley. Our family will welcome you for a nomadic lunch and traditional milk tea. Afterwards, you will assist in the preparations (step by step) of the Mongolian Barbecue or what is commonly called “khokhog”. When the dish is ready, the cook hands out portions of meat along with the hot stones which are tossed from hand to hand (like the old game “hot potatoes”); it’s said to have beneficial properties to the hands’ pressure points. When you have Khorhog – it’s traditional to use your hands for grasping and knives for slicing the meat off the bone – Khorkhog is indeed a popular in the Mongolia.
Day Three – Nomadic milk moonshine – Heard of “Moonshine”? Well today you are going to learn how Nomads make Vodka from milk (B, L, D – Mongolia Jeep Tour to Terelj and Overnight in own Ger): After your breakfast, you will start your horseback or ox cart journey across the Dugui Tsagaani steppe through the forests to the next nomadic family. Upon arrival at the family, you will be welcomed a nomadic lunch and tea – in the late afternoon you will start learning how to distill nomadic milk vodka. To make distilled nomadic spirit, fermented yoghurt is put in a 16-18 liter pot on the fireplace. Before making a fire, you will prepare the utensils for distilling then fill the pot with water to which then prep the fire. As soon as the water is heated, change the water with cold once or twice – after this process the distilled spirit is collected; generally, it takes 2-4 hours for 1-5 liters of vodka to be produced.
